The Hillingdon Centre for Independent Living

Our Services.

How can we help you?

We provide advice and information on a wide range of products to help people to stay independent. We also work closely with local voluntary and statutory services and can signpost or refer to them.

Our assessments are normally carried out at HCIL, however there may be occasions that we need to carry out home visits e.g. to measure for the fitting of a grabrail.  The assessment will either be carried out by an Occupational Therapist or Trusted Assessor.  Following the assessment, equipment may be provided.  We allow up to 45 minutes for an assessment at HCIL.

HCIL-wheelchair-scalesWe have wheelchair accessible scales, allowing a person to remain in their wheelchair while being weighed.  On the initial visit we will need to know the weight of the wheelchair.

We provide a two hour training course for (unpaid) Carers, with a maximum of six people per course. The topics include: safety issues for wheelchair use, for carer and wheelchair user; correct positioning of wheelchair user in chair, loading of wheelchairs into cars.  This course is only available to carers who live in the London Borough of Hillingdon.  Future dates to follow.

Before you visit us here’s a checklist of what we may need:

For bathroom assessments, please bring the measurements of the full width of your bath (from the wall to outside edge) and the height.  Photos of your bathroom may also be helpful.

For toilet assessments, please measure the height of your toilet bowl and the space available around it.

For bed assessments, please check the type of bed base, e.g. divan or slatted.  Please measure the height, when the mattress is compressed.

For chair assessments, please measure the height of your chair seat, with cushion compressed.  It may also be helpful to bring photos of the chair and chair legs.

If you require an interpreter, please let us know when booking your appointment.
